For years, thousands of yogis have been flocking to Bali. As a result, there has been a huge influx of yoga schools offering yoga teacher training courses on the island.

But why has Bali become such a popular yoga hub?

Is it simply the latest trend, or is there a deeper spiritual reason behind it?

And, is it still possible to find truly authentic yoga teacher training in Bali?

I’ve spent a lot of time studying yoga in Bali so I understand why this Indonesian island is a magical place for yogis, and I can give you my tips on how to find an authentic YTT in Bali.

Should I Do Yoga Teacher Training in Bali?

While Bali is undoubtedly a trendy destination right now, it has a long history as a place of healing, and the yoga and spiritual movement on the island is much more than just a passing fad.

Here are three reasons why Bali is a truly special place to do your yoga teacher training:

Hinduism and Spirituality

Bali’s peaceful and spiritual culture aligns perfectly with the ancient yoga teachings.

Often referred to as ‘The Island of the Gods’, Bali’s culture is steeped in Hinduism, connecting it to India, the birthplace of yoga.

Bali has many beautiful Hindu temples and other sacred sites, and you’ll notice that rituals and ceremonies are a crucial part of Balinese culture.

Welcoming Culture

What I find most special about Bali is how open and welcoming the Balinese people are.

Unlike some other countries, the Balinese invite visitors to watch and participate in their ceremonies. This offers yogis an incredible opportunity to explore the Balinese culture and the Hindu religion.

Abundant Nature

Of course, yogis also love Bali because of the island’s beautiful natural scenery, with magnificent volcanoes and an abundance of tropical wildlife.

The picturesque green rice fields and waterfalls, gorgeous ocean views, and endless fresh air are naturally calming, helping you cultivate a peaceful and receptive mindset perfect for practising yoga and meditation.

By choosing to do yoga teacher training in Bali you’ll have the opportunity to not only dive deep into yoga’s Hindu roots and connect to a unique spiritual culture, but also explore the island’s inspiring natural wonders.

What Makes Bali So Spiritual?

Bali is well known for being a highly spiritual place for several reasons:

Powerful Energy Vortex

Bali is believed to be a powerful energy vortex enriched by earth’s Kundalini energy. This energy is thought to purify the earth’s blood and, in turn, cleanse and rejuvenate our own soul and body.

Like other spiritual places and energy vortexes around the world, Bali’s magnetic channels attract those who are seeking to connect with their highest selves.

Interestingly, Bali is thought to house six primary vortexes; Besakih Temple is the central vortex and the others are each associated with different elements – Uluwatu Temple (earth), Mount Batur (fire), Batakau Temple (water), Mount Agung (air), and Pulaki (ether).

This 5 Elements theory is an ancient teaching rooted in yogic and ayurvedic philosophy, showing yet another link between Bali and yoga.

Balinese Philosophy Of Life

The Balinese culture further adds to the island’s spiritual essence.

The culture centres around the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana

Commonly translated as the “Three Causes of Goodness,” this philosophy is about maintaining a harmonious relationship with spirits, people, and nature. Many Balinese people believe that living true to this philosophy will bring about prosperity and harmony.

This belief is why offerings to the spirits and purification ceremonies are daily practice in Bali. The idea behind these practices is to foster and maintain a harmonious relationship with the spirits.

How To Choose A Yoga School In Bali

Despite being a naturally spiritual island, unfortunately, not all yoga schools in Bali are authentic.

Why?

Remember that Bali is a super trendy place right now, attracting more and more visitors every year. Unfortunately, some people, seeing the interest in yoga here, decide to ‘cash in’ on Bali’s hype by opening yoga schools and running YTTs.

That’s why it is crucial to do thorough research before choosing a yoga school in Bali.

So, how can you find credible and authentic yoga teacher training in Bali?

Here are a couple of pointers:

  • Research the course teachers: Where did they study? How long have they been practising and teaching yoga? Does their personal ethos align with your own?
  • Study the curriculum: Does the course focus heavily on asana, or is it well-balanced, including ALL aspects of yoga? Will you learn about yogic philosophy and study the traditional texts?
  • Check reviews: Check the course is approved by Yoga Alliance and read reviews and testimonials from previous students so that you know what to expect.

The Most Authentic Yoga Teacher Training In Bali

On my quest to find authentic yoga teacher training in Bali, I came across Yoga New Vision (YNV).

This yoga school, based near Ubud, the spiritual hub of Bali, caught my attention as it was voted “The Most Authentic Yoga Teacher Training In The World” by Om Yoga Magazine

It’s easy to understand why.

Firstly, Yoga New Vision’s 200-hour YTT blends both yoga’s practical and philosophical sides.

Not only do you gain incredible insights into the ancient yogic philosophy, but you also understand yoga from a modern Western scientific perspective. This unique methodology enables you to apply ancient yoga principles to your modern daily life.

Secondly, the teaching team at YNV is top quality.

The instructors have 14+ years of teaching experience, and you get to study under Master Indian Yoga leaders, scholars, and monks from various backgrounds and ancient lineages. The diversity of beliefs in the teaching team makes it a genuinely non-dogmatic yoga school.

Finally, large class sizes are one of my pet peeves with yoga teacher training.

I believe that YTTs should be personalised and intimate, and that is what you will find at YNV. They keep the class sizes small enough to maintain the quality of teaching and ensure you get all the attention you need.

Choosing Yoga New Vision for your 200-Hour Yoga Training in Bali is also an incredibly convenient choice as they offer YTTCs all year round with prices starting at $1999. Their upcoming training dates and availability are easy to find and regularly updated on their website.
