Best Places for Yoga in Goa

While there are yoga retreats all over Goa, North Goa and South Goa offer different experiences.

North Goa is busy with a vibrant nightlife scene, while South Goa is quieter and more laid-back. Both areas have beautiful beaches and a variety of yoga retreat centres.

South Goa

If you’re looking for pristine beaches and pure relaxation then head to South Goa. The best places for a relaxing yoga retreat in South Goa are the beautiful beaches of Palolem, Agonda and Patnem which are peaceful and perfect for yoga and meditation.

North Goa

If you prefer a more vibrant atmosphere then head to North Goa, but avoid the popular party towns of Baga, Calangute and Anjuna unless you want to party the night away.

The best places for yoga in North Goa are Arambol, Mandrem, Ashvem and Morjim. These are all quieter beaches where you can enjoy a relaxing retreat while also having the option to check out the parties and markets. Inland retreats hidden in the jungle are also a good option as the beaches in North Goa can be quite busy and noisy.

How to Choose the Best Goa Yoga Retreat for you

Goa retreats come in all shapes and sizes so take time to compare and find the right one for you. Here’s some of the most important factors to consider when choosing a yoga retreat in Goa:

Location

Choose a location that suits your preferences – whether you prefer to be close to the beach or immersed in the jungle in more tranquil surroundings.

Places like Baga beach and Anjuna beach in North Goa have become the party capital of India so not ideal for a relaxing retreat.

There are still tranquil retreats to be found inland, in Mandrem and Arambol in North Goa, or on the quieter beaches of South Goa like Palolem, Agonda and Patnem beach.

Type of Yoga

Make sure the retreat offers the type of yoga you are looking for and caters for your level of experience. Most Goa retreats offer traditional Hatha yoga suitable for all levels while some offer multiple styles or focus on Vinyasa, or Ashtanga yoga.

Retreat Schedule

Some retreats offer a more intensive program starting very early in the morning and include teachings on yoga philosophy and spirituality, while others focus on relaxation and rejuvenation and offer a more flexible schedule.

Beach huts in Goa India

Accommodation

Check that the accommodation provided suits your budget and comfort level. From luxury resorts to simple beach huts yoga retreats in Goa cater for all price points but cheaper retreats may not offer the level of comfort you might be accustomed too.

Instructors

Check the reputation of the yoga school and the qualifications and experience of the instructors conducting the retreat. It’s important to feel comfortable with and trust the person guiding you through your practice.

Reviews

Most importantly, read real and unbiased reviews from previous participants to get an idea of their experiences and whether the retreat aligns with your expectations. Check sites like BookRetreats and BookYogaRetreats as the reviews on a retreat’s website or social media may not always tell the whole story.

Tips for Planning your trip to Goa

Best Time to Visit Goa

The best time to visit Goa for a yoga retreat is from November to March when the weather is pleasant and dry ideal for practicing yoga on the beach and swimming in the warm Arabian Sea. April and May can be uncomfortably hot and during the monsoon (June – October) heavy rain forces many retreats to close.

How to Get to Goa

Goa now has two airports, the old airport Dabolim (GOI) is located in the center of the state near Panaji and the new Mopa airport (GOX) is situated in the far north of Goa. Taxi services are available at the airport but can be expensive. Check with your retreat organizer if they offer an airport transfer service.

There are some direct international flights from the UK to Goa. Alternatively, take a flight to Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) and transfer onto one of the many domestic flights from there. You can also reach Goa by train or bus from other cities in India. The main train station is at Madgaon, also known as Margao.

As Goa is part of India all visitors will need to apply for an Indian Visa in advance. You can apply for an eVisa on the official Indian visa website here. Don’t forget travel insurance that covers you for all the activities you plan to do in India too!
