The Best Yoga Teacher Training in Greece - My Guide to the Top Courses and Schools

Why You Should Do Yoga Training in Greece

Greece’s gorgeous natural landscapes, rich spiritual history, and healthy Mediterranean lifestyle make it one of the best European countries to deepen your practice and begin your journey of teaching yoga.

Beautiful Scenery

When you think of natural Greece, you probably envision the enchanting islands that look and feel like paradise. But Greece’s nature goes well beyond turquoise waters and sandy beaches.

You’ll find dense forests, rolling hills, and majestic mountains on the mainland. Meanwhile, there are still picturesque villages and olive groves around the coastal regions and islands. Then there are also the lesser-known Greek wonders – natural thermal springs – scattered throughout the country.

Fascinating History And Mythology

Greece has a long history of philosophy, art, and mysticism. From the teachings of ancient philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle to the mythology of gods and goddesses, Greece offers a unique cultural and spiritual backdrop for your yoga journey.

Greece also has a history of healing and rejuvenation, with ancient wellness practices like mineral baths and herbal therapies. Greek culture complements yoga practice perfectly.

Healthy Mediterranean Cuisine

We’ve all heard about the benefits of following a Mediterranean diet, and by choosing to do your yoga teacher training in Greece, you can experience those benefits first hand!

Mediterranean cuisine is rich in vegetables, olive oil, fresh fish, and plant-based proteins, fuelling your physical practice and cultivating a clear, focused mind.

Moreover, research shows that following the Mediterranean diet can reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases and even extend your lifespan. By choosing a yoga school here, you’ll surely come away with many ideas and inspiration for cooking healthy meals back home.

How To Choose a Yoga School in Greece

As you can see, there are many reasons to do your yoga teacher training in Greece. But how do you ensure you choose the right one?

Here are the most important things to consider…

Location

Firstly, where you do your yoga teacher training will dramatically influence your experience. For example, a YTT on a secluded Greek island will have a completely different vibe from one in the suburbs of Athens.

These are my recommended destinations in Greece to consider for your yoga teacher training:

Cycladic Islands

The Cyclades are perhaps the most popular group of Greek islands, including hot spots like Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros. The Cycladic islands are postcard-like, with Greece’s iconic white-washed architecture and turquoise waters.

While there are several bustling tourist destinations among the Cycladic islands, there are also many peaceful, secluded areas ideal for yoga teacher training.

One particularly serene island is Amorgos. This hidden gem is relatively untouched compared to other islands and has a deep connection to Greek Orthodoxy with very spiritual energy.

Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese are another top choice for yogis. Aside from the famous islands of Rhodes and Kos, there are lesser-known islands with rich history and unique cultural influences.

For example, Karpathos offers a perfect combination of beauty and tranquillity with many traditional villages, giving you a glimpse of authentic Greek culture.

Athens

If ancient history is what calls you to Greece, Athens is for you. By practicing yoga in Athens, you can connect with the timeless energy of the land, enhancing both your physical practice and your spiritual journey.

There are also some excellent places close to Athens that offer an idyllic environment for yoga, such as Evia (Euboea), Greece’s second-largest island. Along with beautiful beaches, you’ll find majestic vineyards and fascinating historical sites here.

Peloponnese

Finally, consider the Peloponnese region on the mainland. This vast area offers a mix of dramatic mountains, quiet coastal towns, and archaeological finds. Far from the tourist crowds, it serves as a grounding, rustic, and nature-filled setting for your Greece yoga training.

Certification (RYT200)

When choosing a yoga school, ensure the courses they offer are certified by Yoga Alliance. This is crucial as these are the most widely recognised certificates in the yoga world, and not all yoga schools are registered or comply with their standards.

While a Yoga Alliance certification is not mandatory to teach yoga, you’ll find that studios prefer or require you to have these credentials. So, by completing a registered program, you’ll gain Yoga Alliance certification and can become a registered yoga teacher (RYT), opening you up to endless teaching opportunities.

Yoga Style

Before choosing a YTT, consider the yoga style you want to deepen your practice in or specialize in as a certified teacher.

Most yoga teacher training courses focus on a specific style, such as Vinyasa or Hatha yoga. So, choosing a course centered around your preferred style makes sense.

That being said, a lot of YTTs are multi-style, meaning they cover several styles during the course. Most multi style YTTs include Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Yin yoga. Some even include workshops in acro yoga and aerial yoga. These programs are ideal if you’re unsure which style you want to teach or if you enjoy a diverse yoga practice.

Reputation & Reviews

There’s something many yogis overlook when searching for a yoga teacher training course in Greece – the yoga school’s reputation.

I suggest thoroughly researching the yoga school you’re interested in before booking. You can do this by checking reviews, but I recommend looking on trusted, impartial platforms like BookYogaTeacherTraining.com or BookRetreats.com rather than on the school’s website or social media pages.

Reviews on unbiased booking sites like these come from real people who have completed that specific teacher training program. By reading them, you can understand what the training offers, whether it aligns with your expectations and any potential drawbacks.

Tips on Visiting Greece for Yoga

Now that you’ve found your perfect Greece YTTC, you’ll be wondering how to prepare. Here’s everything you need to know about planning a yoga teacher training in Greece, including when to visit, how to get there, and what to bring!

Seasons & Weather

Generally, the best time to do yoga teacher training in Greece is during the spring (April to June) or the autumn (September to October).

These shoulder seasons boast warm but not overly hot temperatures, making it both comfortable and enjoyable for outdoor yoga practice. Plus, there are far fewer tourists than peak summer months, creating a more serene environment.

It can get very hot in southern Greece or on islands like Santorini or Crete during the summer. Meanwhile, it may be too cold in the winter to practice yoga outdoors, especially in the north.

That being said, many yoga schools run courses year-round, and doing a YTT in Greece any month can be enjoyable.

Domestic Travel & Airports

With 15 international airports, getting to Greece is super easy. The most common airports people fly into are Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion (on Crete), Santorini, and Mykonos.

I recommend researching where your YTT is taking place and the nearest airport.

For yoga courses on the Greek islands, you may not be able to fly directly there. For example, for Amorgos, you’ll need to fly to Athens and then get a ferry across. Alternatively, some islands, such as Evia, are connected to the mainland via a bridge.

Lastly, note that many Greece yoga courses offer transport to and from the airport, making your journey stress-free. So, definitely enquire about this with your chosen YTT!

What To Bring With You

What you need to bring to your yoga teacher training in Greece will depend on where you are going and what time of year you visit.

Bring plenty of loose, breathable clothing if you visit in the summer. Swimwear is also a must if you’re close to the beach or your accommodation has a pool, as you’ll undoubtedly want to cool off after your asana practice.

If you’re heading to Greece in the spring or autumn, bring lots of layers to adjust to the changing temperatures. And if you’re visiting in winter, I recommend sweaters and a jacket or coat.
