Reasons To Do Yoga Teacher Training in Mexico
Here are a few key reasons why Mexico is a fab place to become a certified yoga teacher.
Beautiful scenery
Mexico has an abundance of stunning landscapes, including beaches, mountains, and jungles. Much of the scenery is also untouched, providing a serene environment to deepen your connection with yourself and mother earth.
Idyllic climate
The warm tropical climate means you can practice yoga outdoors. Many yoga schools here have outdoor shalas and yoga decks to facilitate this connection to nature. Some yoga teacher training courses in Mexico also offer camping as an accommodation option.
Spiritual and healing traditions
Mexican culture features many spiritual practices and Indigenous healing traditions that share the principles of yoga. For example, rituals such as Temazcal (a traditional sweat lodge ceremony) are used for purification, healing, and spiritual renewal and include chanting and meditation techniques.
Short Courses
Don’t have much vacation time but still want to get your yoga certification? No problem! Mexico has some great short yoga courses allowing you to complete a 200 hour certification in as little as 7 days by combining theoretical study at home with in-person yoga teaching practice.
Affordable cost
Lastly, compared to other countries including the USA, the cost of yoga teacher training Mexico can be more affordable.
The Best Locations for Yoga in Mexico
Because of Mexico’s diverse natural scenery and rich culture, there are many beautiful places to do a yoga teacher training course here. You can learn to teach yoga on the beach, among the mountains, or in an authentic Mexican village.
Here are a few destinations that stand out for yoga teacher training Mexico.
Tulum
Tulum is a small but popular town in Quintana Roo, full of tourists, digital nomads, and guess who else? Yogis!
In recent years, Tulum has transformed into a vibrant wellness hub and yoga community, making it a popular spot for yoga teacher trainings. The town is full of spas, yoga schools, and a wide range of holistic healing practices.
Aside from its wellness vibe, Tulum carries a highly spiritual energy thanks to all the nearby ancient Mayan Ruins. So, by choosing to do a yoga training here, you’ll learn about the ancient wisdom of India AND Mexico!
Cozumel & Isla Mujeres
Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are two small islands in Quintana Roo. They may be close to the crowded tourist towns of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, but their vibe couldn’t be any more different. These islands are peaceful, slow, and utterly beautiful.
Cozumel & Isla Mujeres are perfect for yogis who enjoy snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing, thanks to their turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and abundant coral life.
Baja California Sur
If you want to escape the crowds, head to Baja California Sur. This peninsula is sparsely populated, creating an idyllic setting for an intensive yoga immersion. Free from distractions, you can connect within and absorb all the yogic wisdom.
Plus, the abundance of remote beaches in Baja California Sur means you can enjoy long beach walks and skinny dipping in the sea!
Oaxaca
Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, is an enchanting city with a picturesque valley and unspoiled coastline. It is considered one of Mexico’s gastronomic capitals, making it a top choice for those who love food as much as yoga.
Oaxaca Valley is full of fascinating archaeological sites where you can explore Mexico’s history. Puerto Escondido on the coast is also an idyllic spot for a yoga retreat, thanks to its almost empty, long golden beaches and cute fishing villages.
San Cristobal de las Casas
San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas is set in a highland valley surrounded by lush pine forests, giving breathtaking views. Aside from the natural landscapes, the town is full of well-preserved colonial architecture, providing a perfect blend of nature and culture, two key things yogis look for from a Yoga teacher training in Mexico.
Xico
Prefer mountains over beaches? Want to get truly off the grid in Mexico? If so, why not consider a mountainous town like Xico in Veracruz?
By choosing a yoga teacher training in Xico, you’ll get a nature immersion along with a transformative yoga experience. I recommend finding a YTT with camping accommodation to make the most of this untouched area.

Tips for Your Mexico Yoga Teacher Training
Many yogis wonder if they are ready for yoga teacher training. While some yoga schools will admit beginners, it’s generally recommended you have 6 months or more of regular yoga practice before enrolling on a teacher training program.
Weather
Mexico’s terrain includes tropical jungles, deserts, valleys, and mountains, which all make the weather here very changeable depending on the region and time of year.
The El Niño weather event also brings cooler, wetter weather to Mexico in the winter and hotter, drier days in the summer. And, because of this, there are primarily two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season:
Rainy season
The rainy season is characterized by high humidity and downpours, especially in the afternoon. The east coast and Yucatan areas are more likely to experience cyclones during the latter half of the rainy season. Rainy season typically manifests between May and October.
Dry season
From November through to April is when to expect the dry and sunny weather. This season is best for outdoor activities, but expect to see more crowds in the popular areas especially during the tourist season peak from December to February.
The Atlantic hurricane season in Mexico runs from June to November, with the highest risk of hurricanes between September and October.
Travel
Mexico has many international airports with daily flights to and from the United States, Canada and throughout Central and South America. Check which airport is closest to your resort and ask your yoga school if they offer transfers.
- Tulum – Tulum International Airport (TQO)
- Cozumel & Isla Mujeres – Cozumel International Airport (CZM)
- Baja California Sur – La Paz International (LAP) or Los Cabos International (SJD)
- Oaxaca – Oaxaca International Airport (OAX)
- San Cristobal de las Casas – Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport (TGZ)
- Xico – Veracruz International Airport (VER)
Most travellers with North American or European passports do not need a visa to enter Mexico for a stay up to 180 days. Whereas travellers with Asian or African passports may need to apply for a tourist visa in advance. Check the requirements well in advance of booking your YTT.
What to pack
Pack comfortable, lightweight yoga clothing suitable for the climate in Mexico at the time of your visit. Bring several outfits to last between laundry opportunities.
Think about bringing a personal travel yoga mat that offers good grip and fits in your day bag. Yoga schools normally provide mats for students, but if comfort and cleanliness are important to you, you may want to bring your own one.

¿Hasta pronto México?
While the number of yoga schools in Mexico doesn’t compare to the likes of India or Bali, there’s still plenty of excellent yoga teacher training courses on offer throughout the country.
If I had to choose a favorite from my list above, it would be Kootenay Yoga School’s 15 day program on Isla Mujures. Their course is fast-paced, well programmed, teaches all the foundational yoga styles, and has a beautiful garden yoga shala just yards from the ocean. What more could you want?
Before booking your yoga teacher training in Mexico be sure to read reviews on trusted booking sites like BookYogaTeacherTraining and BookRetreats for an honest overview of what to expect. The overall quality of Mexico yoga teacher training is very good, but it can be helpful to understand the difficulties faced by previous students at the school you’re considering.
I hope this post has helped you to find your perfect yoga teacher training course. If you’re interested in other yoga destinations in the Americas, I’ve also written blogs about the best YTTs in Costa Rica, and in the USA.
